What is renters insurance?
Aircraft renter’s Insurance is a personal insurance policy that provides coverage when you’re flying an aircraft you don’t own – this includes flight school training aircraft. It protects YOU in the event of:
- Accidental Damage to the aircraft
- Liability for injury or property damage
- Legal Defense Costs if you are sued
Why do I need it?
While Hampton Aviators carries insurance on all school-owned aircraft, that coverage is primarily to protect the aircraft owner – not the student pilot. Renters insurance adds a critical layer of personal protection and can cover
- Your portion of any deductible if an accident occurs
- Damage not fully covered by the schools policy
- Costs related to third party property damage or injuries
In most cases, students are personally responsible for damages if no renters policy is in place.
What does it cover?
Typical policies include:
- Physical damage and liability: Covers damage you cause to the rented aircraft
- Bodily injury & property damage liability: Covers damage to others
- Medical Payments: Helps pay for injuries
- legal Defense: Covers legal fees if you’re sued
How to get covered
You can purchase a policy online in just a few minutes from reputable aviation insurers such as

We Recommend comparing coverage options to find what best suits your needs.
At Hampton aviators we recommend getting insurance through STARR Insurance.
When Should I get it?
At Hampton Aviatiors we require securing your aircraft renters insurance within the first 5 hours of flight training. While you may not be flying solo right away, Having coverage early provides added protection during dual instruction and ensures you’re financially protected from the start. It’s a smart move that gives you- and your instructor- peace of mind as you begin your journey in the cockpit
What is the minimum required coverage?
While there is no FAA-mandated minimum for renter’s insurance, most flight schools (including many like Hampton Aviators) recommend or require students to carry a basic level of liability and hull damage coverage.
The following minimums must be met
250,000
